I got this when my co. refreshed our Lenovos to Dells, with XP SP3 already on. I had assumed it was a Dell hardware issue - but after reading this, I renamed "Hewlett-Packard Officejet V40 Scanner" to "V40" - and we're away! Thanks for this! BINGO!

I also shortened the name of the scanner from "Hewlett-Packard" to "HP," but I also had to select the scanner again by pressing the scanner button and picking the new name of the scanner.
