I agree completely with you. My challenge is that the social tools (facebook, twitter) are either unknown or a little scary for folks. As for the social office, I have had success moving/directing email threads to wiki pages/comments. If it's worthy of writing, it should be a wiki page. I have also been on a crusade to get my coworkers actively using facebook and twitter. While the latter does little for productivity, it goes a long way for relationships, rapport, and keeping the workplace fun!
